Wii, a video game console that has been developed by Nintendo, is a seventh-generation video game console (it is their fifth home console as well). It was designed as the successor to the famous Nintendo GameCube. Wii is the official name of this new console of Nintendo. Introduced to the world on April 27, 2006, it was on this day that Wii got its present name; it was referred to as the Nintendo Revolution prior to this day.
The name Wii is a name that has not been agreed to by many, although a small number has accepted it. However, it is the official name of Nintendo's next generation console, and is here to stay. The two letter i's in the name are meant to represent the two new controllers needed to use this console. The specialty of the controller of Wii is that the 'Wii-mote' has two uses: it can be used to point at the screen of the game and to detect any motion in three dimensions. To provide sensory feedback to the player, there is also a speaker and a rumbling device found in the controller.
It has been announced that Nintendo plans to release a special set of SD (Secure Digital) cards meant especially for use on this Wii console. These SD cards are known as Wii SD cards and are planned to be used for saving games on the Wii. These Wii SD cards are to have a memory ranging from 2 GB to 7 GB in its capacity. To use this SD card, the player has to insert it in a door that is found in front of the Wii console. With this SD card in the slot, one is provided with one of the many means of saving and storing data on the Wii. This is because the Wii console has been manufactured to utilize different storage mediums (besides the SD cards). However, these other storage mediums are yet to be disclosed.
SD cards are essentially different forms of flash memory cards that are meant for use on various portable instruments, like digital cameras and palm computers. Likewise, the Wii SD card is the flash memory card meant to be used solely on the Wii console. The benefits of these SD cards over the older multimedia cards are that they are usually thicker than the multimedia cards. The specialty of the SD cards is their high data transfer rates. This rate is always changing, and it is because of this point that the Wii SD card was manufactured to give support to the high data transfer rate of the Wii console. These Wii SD cards are protected with a "write-protect switch" on its side.
